Awesome movie. Daylight horror is not an easy thing to achieve. I was very impressed with the first half - a very maturely put together premise. But half way through, it either became jeopardised by too many ideas, or not enough focus. Either way, it was messy and unclear how to reveal what was all too obvious to the average viewer - and all the finesse of the first half was left ashen in its rapidly dwindling invention. So by the final act, it was floated by the weight of so little, it could have not existed at all, and probably done the film a favour. What a shame.

Hårgas are a cult and and they wanted Dani to be May Queen. They manipulated the events so that they could advance Christian and Dani to break up. This is what cults do in real life - destroy old relationships in order to get people in. This was made possible, because they are BOTH confused, both having their issues and lack of direction. But I'm amazed that people consider Dani, she took part in choosing a human sacrifice, when the morally / ethically choice would to refuse? It's a horror movie but people are pretty messed up if they don't see that. I don't think what Christian does can be called gaslighting - but he's still being quite spineless and manipulative, but more out of instinct rather than any plan. They create the environment where he feels like an outsider, and she feels like she belongs there. This is a point I haven't seen been mentioned often: when they make Dani choose the final sacrifice- in what condition is Christian? Unable to SAY ANYTHING. Dani is angry at him, justifiably, but at a man who the Hårgas have made paralyzed and unable to speak. And they want Dani to be freshly heartbroken, so he would pick Christian- because doing so, she is made accomplice to the killing. That's her TRUE FINAL RITE into the Hårgas. Not the fabricated theatre of May Queen crowning, but making her take active part in choosing sacrifices. In that moment, she's liberated, but also insane. Is Christian a shitty boyfriend? Yes. Should they break-up? Yes. Should Dani choose a sacrifice? No. She should have either picked the Hårga man or flat-out refuse to choose ANYONE as a sacrifice. People idolising Dani somehow seem to overlook this lol. You go girl, be held and find a new home, take part in human sacrifices! Is a new side shown out of Dani in the end? Yes, but it's partly because she's gone insane. The original script literally describes the smile as insane, as liberation that the insane only can feel. She has lost everything and she's made to choose a sacrifice- a sacrifice that she's also being manipulated into. And she is now in the control of the Hårgas after that. She's taken part into their murders. The suit made out of flowers is a perfect metaphor: they shower her with love, but wanting to imprison her. She's so overwhelmed with the flowers it's hard for her to move. They welcome her home, because as the only blond female of the group, she's the perfect baby making machine for their blood lines. A pregnant woman has more trouble to escape as well. And this is why I love this movie even more than Hereditary: it's even more psychological, doesn't require supernatural aspects- and it's core strength is at what is IMPLIED even more than what is actually shown. That is powerful. NEITHER Dani or Christian are innocent. Neither are they guilty. They are lost, confused pawns and neither find any true liberation in the end. One loses his life, one loses their soul, sanity and individuality. There's a chance she will adjust but that is left open. I think it's a perfect ending to a horror movie. The character that has lost the most, has also become part of something truly sinister.

Damn it's a real life buff shaggy on a side note I wasn't expecting that I honestly assumed you'd be a little scrawnier.
Psychologically-fragile American college student Dani attends a celebratory midsommar festival in northern Sweden with her graduate student boyfriend, Christian, and his cohorts Josh and Mark. They are invited by Pelle, an exchange student who was raised in an isolated commune there; he explains the celebration occurs only once every ninety years. The festivities are initially harmless, but soon ramp up to disturbing proportions.
Ari Aster's follow-up to "Hereditary. Midsommar" marks a significant tonal shift for the director, but it is in truth a much more aesthetically rich film. Thematically, it is less dense, but the film heaps on hallucinogenic visuals in a manner that leaves the audience feeling as intoxicated as its chemically-induced characters.
When the film hits, it hits hard, and its only real downfall is that it fails to reach a true fever pitch, despite appearing to be heading in that direction. Instead, the dread slowly builds as the film plods toward its dour conclusion. Fans of the classic "The Wicker Man" will see plenty in common with this film, and it stands as an obvious reference point for Aster. Part of the film's failure to reach a fever pitch may be due to the relatively unclear motivations of the protagonist, specifically in the final act; while it's clear why she makes the decisions she does, the emotional groundwork for them feels underserved, resulting in a finale that seems slightly shallow.
Despite this downfall, Aster manages to present a lush and intoxicating film that induces dread in a manner that is oppressive and subtly terrifying, leaving the audience quietly sweating in their seats. 8/10.

We expected a bigger scare. There is some tension here. It is watchable. A bit too long though. Some creepy scenes. Certainly very strange. It may entertain you. We aren't sure, but mostly it's fine. Midsommer 2020. I don't think the movie wanted to make us feel like her boyfriend deserved death, in fact, during the entire movie he is shown being comprehensive and the only times he cheats on her, it's not real cheating because he was on drugs. The fact that she makes him killed it's not showed as an empowerment at all (did we watch the same movie? but it's actually very tragic, you said that she's a stupid and emotionally weak character and you're completely right, in fact people like her are the most likely to be taken by cults (very lame and weak, no family left, no affective bonds. She let the poor guy die because he is the only bond left between her and the cult that gradually impose itself as a new family (the scene when the girls share the pain is very clear. The movie ends with her, smiling like a crazy person who will spend the rest of his life chained and controlled by a religious cult, where do you see the empowering message in this.
